Days 16-20
Day 16 Election Day
All I can say, besides People Who Don't Vote Are Idiots, is: thank god C. Virginia Fields got knocked out in the Primary. She is the only candidate in the City who actually made Ferrer look good. Can we please get a proposition on the ballot that demands the immediate exile from any public forum of candidates who, year after year, election after election, do more campaigning than real work? Three strikes and you are O-U-T out, Freddy. There are smart democrats in this town (like the Mayor) why can't we get one of them to run? Okay, I'm done except to clarify my CFV point. That woman hired the worst (dumbest, least articulate, most annoying) staff. And then she actually sent them out into the community as representatives of herself and her office. Way to let us know how freakishly unimportant a Borough President really is. No offense, Marty. Love you and especially loved that anti-fat thing. That was great.
Did I ever mention that the Krups carafe rules? It's more comfortable to grab/pour than the original Mr. Coffee. The coffee maker itself is great and now even better. Improved!
Here are some things I learned from spineuniverse.com (that coincide with what I have been experiencing and, therefore, seem right to me):
Herniated disks are usually suffered by people in their 30's and 40's. Research shows that a predisposition for slipped discs may occur in families, often affecting several members (like my Aunt).
Herniate means to bulge or stick out. Discs are defined as the soft cushions between the bones of the spine. Herniated discs are common in the lumbar spine, a part of the backbone that is between the bottom of the ribs and hips. Initial treatment for a herniated disc usually involves resting the lower back area, maintaining a comfortable posture and allowing only minimal activity for a few days or up to several weeks. This resting period results in relief from any spinal nerve inflammation (drugs). More activity is often permissible after the pain medication is taken for at least two days. In addition, physical therapy may be beneficial under the guidance of a physical therapist. Physical therapy remedies may include traction, ultrasound and electrical muscle stimulation (!). A main goal of treatment is to decrease the amount of muscle spasm a patient is experiencing. Most people suffering from a herniated disc can recover in about four weeks, or sometimes longer. Activity, stress or mechanical problems often cause herniated discs. A herniated disc may even be caused by a single excessive strain. The compression and sharp pain a person feels down the leg because of the slipped disk, is called sciatica. Sciatica can cause intense pain along any part of the sciatica nerve pathway - from the buttocks to the toes. If the nerve is compressed, symptoms may include a loss of reflexes, weakness and numbness besides severe pain. Sciatic nerve pain can make everyday activities such as walking, sitting and standing difficult.
My PT introduced me to a new muscle: the piriformis, it's in the middle of your butt. Today we hit my piriformis (hmm, don't I have two? one on each side? have to look into that) with ultrasound, massage and ice. I have been warned that tomorrow will likely be rough. Here's some more info from the spine universe people (again in line with my experience):
Piriformis Syndrome is caused by an
entrapment (pinching) of the
sciatic nerve as it exits the Greater Sciatic notch in the gluteal
region. Many weekend athletes and people who spend long hours sitting are
prone to this syndrome.
The athlete's cause is primarily due to improper stretching and warm-up exercises as well as overuse during activity. In this case it is most likely that the piriformis muscle is irritated and usually in spasm. For the patient who sits for extended periods of time, their primary cause is due to contracture of the piriformis muscle. In this case the piriformis muscle is shortened and does not allow for the smooth movement of the sciatic nerve during leg motion. Prolonged sitting can hamper your successful recovery. My doctors and, I am sure, all doctors LO+VE it when patients look up stuff on the Internet then ask them about it. But this is seriously what I am living. I haven't felt like eating much more than roasted almonds today so I made a special drink to take my Naproxen (which, it seems, is good for cramps - see if you can put that together). One was enough for the pill but I made a second anyway. Delicious. My Egg Cream (a tribute to the Brooklyn original) 1 soup-spoon sized scoop of vanilla ice-cream chocolate syrup milk seltzer water
In a large cup (like the plastic kind you can take home from a Yankee game), cover the small ice-cream soup with chocolate syrup, then milk. Mix with the soup spoon, enough to mostly combine but not mash all the ice-cream. Fill remainder of cup with seltzer. Drink. Repeat as often as needed. Okay, I did eat to take the final pill of the day: Tuna Salad, Take Two 1 6oz can solid white tuna in water, drained 2 TB mayonnaise juice from half a lemon 1/4 or 1/2 medium red onion, peeled, thinly sliced and roughly chopped 2 tsp capers black pepper, to taste flatbread / wrap
In a mixing bowl, with a fork, break the tuna into small, pieces. Add all ingredients. Combine thoroughly. The mixture will be a bit drier than you expect. Can be held in refrigerator for a day or so until ready to serve.
I wrapped half of this mixture up in a very thin sort of flatbread, but any wrap would two. Makes 2 sandwiches.
Note: If tomatoes were decent, I would add them
Day 17 Today is the day I was supposed to take the GRE. The kind, caring people there, instead of putting my reserved time/space on hold until I am able to sit for 3.5 hours, charged me $40 and forced me to pick a new date in the future. A Medical Emergency, they explained, is only when you are in a hospital on the day of the test. Foolish me for giving them advance notice.
Of course, I would have slept through it anyway as I was in bed for 12.5 hours but...hardly any Pain in my Butt this morning! I ♥ my PT. And, equally exciting, I actually read two whole chapters of a book last night! Henry James, you rule. My brain is coming back to me.
Piece of vegetable quiche (maybe from Whole Foods, L wasn't sure, I'll put in my own recipe anyway) and small green salad. Works. Granny Smith apple + about 20 Triscuits with cream cheese would also work (I can feel it) but I didn't need one at snack time.
Quiche 2 TB butter 1 small onion, small dice 1 10-oz pkg frozen spinach, thawed and drained 1 pre-made pie crust (hey, I'm sick!) 3/4 cup grated gruyere cheese 4 eggs heavy cream 1/4 t nutmeg (though I have used pumpkin pie spice and it was good)
In a skillet over medium-high heat, melt butter Add onion. Saute until soft, maybe 7 minutes. Add spinach and combine well. Remove from heat.
MORE MORE
Alt: Add mushroom too, saute with onion, but B hates them. Or tomato.
Worst news of the day: No more Tino! The Yankees declined Tino's one-year option and are instead giving him $250,000 to make last year his last season with the team. Ageism! He turns 38 in a month.
Day 18
One bowl of multi-grain cheerios with half a sliced banana were good enough for a pill. One thing I should note, though I've been good and have been having a full glass of water with almost every pill, I know my stomach likes it better when I've had more to drink.
Today I embraced and fully realized my inner Geek. I actually walked, deliberately, into that computery section of Barnes and Noble and had a look around. I landed on Web Design, sidled up to a dorky little fellow and flipped through a few books. As usual in large overly-lit super stores (or when reading things too technical), I got a huge headache fast and retreated to the windy outdoors.
Quesadillas
tortillas cheese scallions optional: salsa, hot sauce
MORE
Beans (I usually do this with Black, but sometimes Pink)
1 15.5-oz can beans (Goya is my fav), rinsed and drained small bunch of cilantro, rinsed, de-stemmed and chopped
In a small saucepan over medium-low flame, heat the bean until they are warm. Add cilantro, combine well. Serve immediately or removed from heat, then quickly re-heat when ready to serve. Yes it's that easy and rinsing the beans gets rid of excess salt and gook.
Day 19 Vets / ANZAC Day
My periformis and butt in general have been less tense since my last trip to PT and I've been able to sleep on my right side again; something I'd greatly missed. I've also been moving around with more agility which led me to think I could do a little sitting. Sad to say, last night, after only about 20 minutes in a chair, my lower back was burning slightly. I am an idiot.
More periformis attention at PT today. I learned that the ultrasound gets 3-4 centimeters below the skin and, therefore, deeper into the muscle. The newer machines are heated (at the head of the little stick they use) which makes a patient (including me) feel like they feel the treatment. But you don't, until the next day when you have the same soreness you have from the topical treatment, which I also got. Then ice. I expect to be sore tomorrow.
Thanks to my newly returned clarity of mind, I finished half a book and am now sleeping less well. Have to take that up with my doctor.
Carrot Curry Soup 1 large leek (white part and some lower green), cleaned and medium sliced olive oil 3-4 large carrots, cut into 1-inch rounds 1 medium-large Yukon gold potato, cut in 8 pieces 1-2 inches fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced 2-3 vegetable bouillon cubes water curry powder 1 cup milk, room temperature, not cold from fridge Croutons, optional
Note: broth v. b cubes Chickpeas instead of potato
Survived the LIRR. We waited until after the Rush so I had plenty of standing/walking room. Public Transportation: take it.
Day 20
Half a pumpernickel bagel, dark toasted with tunafish and sliced cucumber. Glass of OJ+water. Cup of coffee with milk.
Since I still cannot sit down to a meal, we decided to get take-out (and by "decided" I mean, had little choice but to). I had a couple moo shu vegetable pancakes, some kind of spicy beef, and a bite of a pastrami egg roll (gross) from Wok Tov (Kosher Chinese). I knew that was enough for the pills and for my little tummy but I had to have a chocolate flying saucer from Carvel. And then half another one. Fortune: A focused mind is one of the most powerful forces in the universe. Stay off the drugs.
