Here's an MRI of a Herniated Lumbar Spine (like me!).
The arrows point to the disk that's herniated but you can see the layers
of vertebrae/disk/vertebrae/disk. Gross! |
| I am positive my life would be better if today was
not the first time in my life I heard about my Quadratus Lumborum
(QL). |

 |
The QL (left) is the posterior muscle of the
abdominal wall. It originates at the medial part of the Iliac Crest
(right) and iliolumbar ligament and inserts onto the lowest rib through
the 4th lumbar vertebrae. |
 |
| I also can't believe I've never heard
about my Erector Spinae. |
 |
The Erector Spinae (left) is the largest muscle mass
of the back. It lies in the intermediate layer of intrinsic back muscles
(deep muscles of the back, concerned with the maintenance of posture and
movements of the vertebral column and head). It
is divided into three longitudinal columns:
- iliocostalis muscle
- longissimus muscle
- spinalis muscle
These muscles insert onto each rib in one or two rib segments. They also
merge deep into the QL!
|
| The Erector Spinae Pain Referral Pattern:
Since the
erector spinae muscle runs the full length of the vertebra, pain may
refer from between the shoulder blades upwards into the shoulder and
chest, or downwards into the buttocks (or, if you're really lucky, like
me, it'll go both ways!)
How To
Aggravate the Pain:
-straining to lift objects
-movements
that combine bending and twisting of the trunk
-prolonged sitting and standing without relaxation |
